Plate 238 Cairo from gate of Citzenib looking towards Suez - After David Roberts
The city of Cairo provided David Roberts plenty of opportunities to draw its exceptional Islamic architecture. This highly detailed lithograph shows the city from 'the Gate of Citzenib' in the foreground to the desert of Suez in the far distance. Various minarets dominante the landscape along with the ancient city walls. The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is obvious in the distance on the left. An exceptional work by Roberts.
The drawings and watercolours from this sketching trip by David Roberts of the Holy Land and Egypt were collated together into folios and released over a seven year period by the publisher F.G. Moon from 20 Threadneedle Street London. This lithograph is an original First Edition version (1842-1849).
