Plate 136 Statues of Memnon, Thebes - After David Roberts
A depiction of the statues of Memnon in Thebes. These two massive stone statues are of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned in Egypt during the Eighteenth Dynasty. Ever since 1350 BCE, they have stood in the Theban Necropolis which is located to the west of the River Nile from the modern city of Luxor. The drawings and watercolours from this tour of the Holy Land and Egypt by Roberts were collated together into folios and released over a seven year period (1842-1849) by the publisher F.G. Moon from 20 Threadneedle Street London. This lithograph is from the Royal Subscription Edition (1842-1849) with only 500 copies produced per depiction.
