Clarkson Stanfield R.A. (1793-1867) - Hay Barges on the Thames

A fine early watercolour by the maritime artist Clarkson Stanfield depicting a hay barge sailing along the River Thames possibly near to Millwall. 

 

Medium: Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour on paper.

 

Signed lower left 'CS Society Drawing' (most likley the Society for British Arists which Stanfield was a founding member for in 1824 and became its president in 1829, this would date the drawing to the late 1820s), 30 x 42 cm, framed.

 

Provenance: Frank T. Sabin Exhibition, 1964.
