Cornelius Varley (1781-1873) - A Welsh Mountainous Landscape
Varley visited Wales on several occasions but two documented tours were completed in 1803 (with Joshua Cristall and William Havell) and 1805 by himself. This work with a waterfall and a mountainous backdrop suggests the location in Wales could be near to Snowdonia. A comparison with no.19 in Colnaghi's 1973 exhibition on Varley is useful. This drawing depicts the Devils Bridge in North Wales and has very clear similarities (see photos).
