George Barret Jr (1767-1842) - Italianate Landscape
Barret Jr was one of the original members of the Old Water-colour Society (O.W.S.) and was a regular exhibitor there. His early works were generally of topographical landscapes in a similar style to his father's watercolours. Later on in his career he switched to more Claudian romantic compositions of imaginary landscapes such as the one in our composition. This largescale watercolour is typical of Barret Jr's later style and was probably an exhibition piece. It also bears a resemblance to his friend Joshua Cristall's Claudian landscapes.
