George Holmes (1771-1845) - Victualling Office from Mount Edgecumbe, Plymouth
  • George Holmes (1771-1845) - Victualling Office from Mount Edgecumbe, Plymouth

George Holmes was an Irish artist who moved to London in 1799. In Ireland he was described as an illustrator and landscape draughtsman. He also studied at RDS schools and won a medal for a landscape work in 1789. When Holmes came to London he exhibited briefly at the Royal Academy before living firstly in Bristol and then further south in Plymouth and Cornwall. He is recorded as living in Plymouth on Union Street in 1841 which is very close to the date on our work. This highly finished pencil sketch shows Holmes skill as a landscape artist. It depicts the Victualling Office in Plymouth from a nearby hill, with Mount Edgecumbe in the distance.
