Guiliano Zasso (1833-1889) - Portrait of a Lady
  • Guiliano Zasso (1833-1889) - Portrait of a Lady

This delicately drawn watercolour of a lady in Tudor/Elizabethan attire is by the Italian artist Guiliano Zasso (sometimes spelt Giuliano Zasso). Few works by this artist come up for sale making this an interesting and important picture. An oil painting of 'Mary Queen of Scots' by Zasso was sold by Christie's on 23rd January 2008 as lot 83 (see photos). This work clearly shows Zasso depicted period portraits of British subjects suggesting our work may be of an important historical figure.

Medium: watercolour on paper, 23.3 x 19.2 cm, mounted. Inscribed l.r. below the watercolour 'Guiliano Zasso' and again inscribed 'Guiliano Zasso' on a previous mount hidden behind the current one.

Provenance: Anonymous Sotheby's Sale, 14/7/88 as lot 37; Collection of Bill Thomson (Albany Gallery).
