Att. Paul Sandby (1731-1809) - Italianate landscape with castle
A typical watercolour from the 1780s attributed to Sandby of travellers in a continental landscape with a castle and a lake. The capriccio setting of the large tree is typical of many Sandby compositions and helps to focus the viewer on the travellers and sailing boats on the right hand-side of the work.
Medium: watercolour paper, 17 x 25 cm, mounted. Various inscriptions linking to Sandby on reverse.
Provenance: Private collection, Australia.
Condition report: some fading and abrasion marks on the watercolour, this is particularly obvious in the sky on the right hand-side.
