Peter De Wint (1784-1849) - A Wooded Landscape
  • Peter De Wint (1784-1849) - A Wooded Landscape

A large watercolour of a wooded landscape by De Wint. The artist has used the tall slightly barren tree to frame the extensive composition. There are a couple of grazing cows to the left and a set of white laundry next to a cottage on the right. De Wint has expertly used blues and shades of green to depict the horizon which was a common technique he employed. The foliage is where the artist's skill is really shown with his carefully placed watercolour washes. Few could depict the English countryside like De Wint.

Unfortunately, there are no inscriptions linking the watercolour to a specific place but  it could easily be somewhere in Shropshire or Lincolnshire, both of which were well recorded by the artist.

Medium: watercolour on paper, 34 x 50.5 cm, framed.

Provenance:  Collection of Arthur Russell Johnson (label verso); Leger Galleries, London, exhibited in July 1968 (label verso); Christie's, English Watercolours and Drawings Sale, 18th June 1985, lot 73.
