Peter De Wint (1784-1849) - Farmhouse in Staffordshire
Sepia was a preferred medium of Peter De Wint and this idylic scene of a farmhouse in his home county of Staffordshire shows the artist in his comfort zone. The chickens in the foreground have been delicately drawn and De Wint's use of different shades of sepia help to give depth and tone to the picture. The Fry Gallery were renowned experts on de Wint and any work from their collection is always highly sought after.
Medium: sepia wash and pencil on paper, 22 x 32.1 cm, framed.
Provenance: Fry Gallery (label affixed verso, with later Suffolk address for when they moved premises from London).
Condition report: in excellent condition. There is a tiny tear of the paper towards the top left hand-corner of the watercolour. This is only noticeable when viewed up close, it must have been pasted down by the Fry Gallery when it was previously framed.
