Peter La Cave (fl. 1769-1810) - Pastoral Landscape with Shepherd
  • Peter La Cave (fl. 1769-1810) - Pastoral Landscape with Shepherd

A bucolic landscape scene by Peter La Cave of a Shepherd coversing with a woman and child. This work is typical of La Cave and includes livestock that are a staple of his many watercolours. Although not much is known about La Cave, he was a friend of Julius Caesar Ibbetson and was an assistant to George Morland. He was respected in his own right as an artist and John Sell Cotman was an admirer of his work using tracings of La Cave's animals.

Medium: watercolour and ink on paper, signed l.l. 'La Cave 1804', 12.5 x 17.5 cm, framed.

Provenance: Heather Newman Fine Quality Early English Watercolours (label affixed verso).

Condition report: some fading and time staining, the photographs give a good idea of the condition.
