Rev. Joseph Wilkinson (1764-1831) - Ullswater from Gowbarrow Park
Rev. Joseph Wilkinson was 'an enthusiastic amateur landscape painter who was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, graduating as Fourth Wrangler in 1794. He became a Fellow of the College and was appointed rector of the Wrethams, Norfolk in 1803. He was also perpetual curate of Beccles and domestic chaplain to the Marquess of Huntly. Previously he had been a minor canon of Carlisle and had lived at Ormathwaite. His Select Views were published with the letterpress by Wordsworth'. '[1]
There are few known works by Wilkinson but those that can be attributed to him tend to be views of the Lake District such as the one we have for sale. It is reminiscent of Francis Towne and John White Abbott's style
