Rodney Charman (b.1944) - Tall Ship under sail

Rodney Charman is a renowned maritime artist known for his meticulous detail and evocative atmospheric effects. Self-taught and painting since the age of 21, he draws deeply on his upbringing as the son of a naval officer and his lifelong passion for sailing.

Charman has travelled extensively to research his work, including journeys to Hong Kong, China, Nova Scotia, and the United States. The artist is a regular exhibitor with the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London and his work has also been widely published as fine art prints. Based in Lymington, Hampshire, his firsthand sailing experience—ranging from tall ships to competitive racing—continues to inform the authenticity and atmosphere of his work.

This highly detailed painting of a Tall Ship under sail is reminiscent of works by Montague Dawson. The sun is hidden partially by clouds and gives the light source behind the ship. This is a great example of Charman's skill as a marine painter and is one of his earlier compositions.
