Samuel Atkins (fl. 1787-1808) - Shipping off Dover
Samuel Atkins was a 'watercolourist who specialised in charming shipping scenes. He first exhibited, from London addresses, at the Royal Academy in 1787 and very year (except 1790) until 1796. He then went on a voyage to the East Indies. By 1804 he had returned and exhibited a Chinese subject at the Royal Academy. He last exhibited in 1808 from an address in The Strand. It may be he died at this time.' [1]
This watercolour by Atkins is typical of his skill in maritime art. He has composed a scene with busy shipping and Dover Castle in the background. He was particularly good at drawing naval vessels and this is a great example by the artist.

Condition report: generally good for its age. A small bit of time staining and the odd tiny mark. There's a very faint crease line in the bottom left hand corner but only visible when viewed very closely. The frame shows a bit of wear. Please see photos.
